“Monterrey, the largest city in northern Mexico and the country’s industrial capital, registered a record 33 murders in one day, Nuevo Leon state Security Council spokesman Jorge Domene said Thursday.
The wave of killings started in the early minutes of Wednesday and ended just before midnight, when a shootout between rival gunmen left 10 dead, Domene said.
The majority of the victims belonged to Los Zetas and the Gulf cartel, the criminal organizations that have been battling for control of the area, the security official said.
‘Just five were with the authorities. The two bodyguards of the governor (Rodrigo Medina) and three guards from the Cadereyta prison,’ Domene said.”
