People, Culture, Organizations, Cybersecurity, and Technology

We continue our effort to underscore certain patterns and themes found throughout the OODAcast library of over 80 conversations with leaders and decision-makers.

In December 2020, OODA CEO Matt Devost had a conversation with Masha Sedova, an award-winning people-security expert, speaker, and entrepreneur focused on helping companies transform employees from a risk into a key element of defense.  She has been a part of our OODA Network for years, including speaking at our legacy FedCyber event, where she introduced the behavior-based and gamified cybersecurity training and awareness she put in place at Salesforce. 

In May 2021, OODA CTO had a conversation with Bryson Bort, the Founder of SCYTHE, a start-up building a next-generation attack emulation platform, and GRIMM, a boutique cybersecurity consultancy. He is widely known in the cybersecurity community for helping advance concepts of defense across multiple critical domains. He is the co-founder of the ICS Village, a non-profit advancing awareness of industrial control system security.

Cybersecurity Investment, Due Diligence, Innovation and Growth

We continue our effort to underscore certain patterns and themes found throughout the OODAcast library of over 80 conversations with leaders and decision-makers.

In May of 2020, OODA CTO Bob Gourley had a conversation with Boston Merdian’s co-founder and partner JC Raby. JC has more than 16 years of investment banking experience in mergers and acquisitions as well as private and public financings. JC’s clients include leading Fortune 500 acquirers and middle-market growth companies across a number of industries including media and Technology (software, business services, and communications equipment) manufacturing, and consumer products, together accounting for over $9 billion in transaction value.

In July of 2020, Bob spoke with Andrew (Andy) Lustig, a partner at the high tech law firm Cooley where he focuses on private equity investments, mergers and acquisitions, and the general corporate representation of high-growth technology companies in both the commercial and government marketplace. His practice includes a wide range of industry sectors including information technology, national security, cybersecurity, data analytics, software, and telecommunications. He also represents a number of leading venture capital and private equity firms.

To help members optimize opportunities and reduce risk, OODA hosts a monthly video call to discuss items of common interest to our membership. These highly collaborative sessions are always a great way for our members to meet and interact with each other while talking about topics like global risks, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and current or future events impacting their organizations. We also use these sessions to help better focus our research and better understand member needs. This month’s call was marked by more than the usual number of follow-up commitments on what were clearly promising ideas and projects with great potential for OODA Loop research and analysis (and are also a bit more time-sensitive than usual due to the crisis conditions in Ukraine).

Takeaways from the Second Meeting of the CISA Cybersecurity Advisory Committee

The inaugural meeting of the CISA Cybersecurity Advisory Committee (CSAC) was held in December 2021.  The second meeting of the committee was recently held in March. We provide here a brief recap of the vital updates and takeaways. For your future planning, a public comment period is scheduled for each committee meeting.  We encourage OODA Loop members to participate in this public-facing cybersecurity community event.  According to CISA, The next Cybersecurity Advisory Committee will be held in person on June 22, 2022, in Austin, Texas. Details and information on how to attend will be forthcoming. 

“The Committee has truly hit the ground running in scoping key areas of focus to help support our evolution as the nation’s cyber defense agency. I look forward to our next meeting in June where we’ll begin to get a sense of key deliverables,” said CISA Director Jen Easterly.

Intelligence Gathering Tools and Analysis, Strategic Thinking and Uncertainty

We continue our effort to underscore certain patterns and themes found throughout the OODAcast library of over 80 conversations with leaders and decision-makers, on topics such as leadership, empowering a team, finding the right people, clear decision-making while operating in a low information environment, the qualities and best practices of a true leader,  the future of intelligence, the future of cyber threats and cyber espionage and strategic action.

In May of 2020, OODA CTO Bob Gourley had an OODAcast conversation with Carmen Medina, who served 32 years in senior positions at the Central Intelligence Agency, most of which focused on one of the hardest tasks in the community, that of analysis. Bob and Carmen discuss information-gathering and intelligence tools, uncertainty, and decision-making.  The conversation is also interesting as a time capsule from the May 2020 timeframe of the pandemic:  before the vaccine, before variant surges, before the 900,000 plus death toll.  It is interesting to read now  – with the knowledge of how the uncertainty at the time Bob and Carmen spoke has now played out.
