German police reported that the son of former German president Richard von Weizsaecker was stabbed to death at his workplace in Berlin. Fritz von Weizsaecker was giving a lecture at a hospital in Berlin where he worked as the head physician when a man jumped out of the audience and attacked von Weizsaecker with a knife. The 57-year-old German native is now in custody for the murder of Weizsaecker and the assault of an off duty police officer, who suffered serious injuries that required surgery. Despite immediate medical attention from colleagues, von Weizsaecker died shortly after the attack.
Civilians and politicians alike shared their condolences online, expressing their sorrow over the brutal and public murder. Von Weizsaecker worked at several hospitals, including the Harvard Medical School in the US and a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. Von Weizsaecker was an expert on internal medicine and gastroenterology and the son of the esteemed president Richard von Weizsaecker.
