A recent article by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) highlights the threat of e-skimming attacks. This threat is also known as Magecart, an umbrella term for various criminal groups that attack websites with the aim of injecting them with “skimming” malware designed to steal the payment card information of visitors.
The FBI said the threat is especially relevant to “small and medium-sized businesses and government agencies that take credit card payments online.” The bureau recommends SMBs to take to following steps in order to safeguard themselves against e-skimming:
- Keep systems, including security solutions up to date.
- Change default login credentials wherever these are present.
- Inform employees about cybersecurity best practices.
- Segregate and segment network systems.
