A security researcher recently stumbled across an unsecured web server containing the tax records of a total of 20 million Russian citizens. The owner of the leaky database is believed to be a Ukranian national who had been exposing the sensitive data since May of 2018. It is not clear how the owner obtained the data or for what purpose it was being stored in the unsecured server.
The leaked data includes full names, home addresses, residency statuses, passport numbers, phone numbers, Tax ID numbers, employer names and tax amounts. The database could provide criminals with a goldmine of information that can be used to carry out numerous crimes including identity theft and tax fraud.
