An Iranian government spokesman on Wednesday stated that Tehran could agree to minor changes to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and would be willing to reassure other signatories that it does not aim to acquire nuclear weapons, but only if the United States lifts sanctions on the country and rejoins the agreement.
Tensions between Iran and the US have risen dramatically since Washington abandoned the nuclear deal last year and reimposed sanctions. Iran began violating the accord earlier this year, citing a perceived unwillingness by Europe to help the regime circumvent the US measures.
