Trump Leaves Open Possibility of Easing Iranian Sanctions to Spur Nuclear Talks
Following the departure of John Bolton as the White House national security adviser, it looks like President Trump is taking a step back from his administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran. The President has signaled that he is ready for diplomatic talks with the possibility of easing economic sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy. American sanctions were imposed last year, after the U.S. withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action which was designed to carry out restrictions on Iran’s civilian nuclear enrichment program.
Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have floated the possibility of a meeting at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York. However, President Hassan Rouhani of Iran has said “If the sanctions remain in place, negotiations with the U.S. administration have no meaning.”
