Business email compromise (BEC) scams have resulted in over $26 billion in global ‘exposed dollar losses’ over the past three years, the The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) estimates.
The figure includes actual costs from successful scam campaigns and hypothetical costs from failed attacks. For the aforementioned period, the IC3 has registered more than 166,349 BEC incidents targeting organizations of all sizes across 177 countries, In the US, all 50 states have been targeted.
