Earlier this year, a threat actor hacked the Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary (BIRD) website of the European Central Bank and installed malware designed for phishing campaigns on the server of the third-party hosting provider. The ECB said the hackers may have obtained the names and email addresses of 481 subscribers to the BIRD newsletter, but assured that no login credentials were captured.
The BIRD website is externally hosted and attackers therefore didn’t obtain access to other systems, according to the ECB. The site has been temporarily shut down as the bank investigates the incident and notifies the potential victims. The hack marks the second security breach affecting ECB systems in five years, as the bank also suffered a cyberattack in 2014.
