In the first half of this year 3,813 data breaches were reported, which is 54% more than in the same period last year, a new report by Risk Based Security shows. The number of exposed records rose by 52%. The eight biggest breaches in the first six months of 2019 exposed 3.2 billion records. Three of these incidents are among the biggest breaches ever recorded. Two-thirds (67%) of data breaches occurred in the business sector.
Inga Goddijn of Risk Based Security said that “the vast majority of incidents are attributable to malicious actors outside an organization,” and that “unauthorized access of systems or services, skimmers and exposure of sensitive data on the Internet have been the top three breach types since January of 2018.” However, she added that most records are exposed as the result of “insider actions, both malicious and accidental.”
