4 Dating Apps Pinpoint Users’ Precise Locations – and Leak the Data
Researchers with Pen Test Partners have discovered that four popular dating apps with a total of 10 million users leak location data that can be used to track people almost in real-time. The researchers have developed a tool that combines location information from Grindr, Romeo, Recon and 3fun, and uses the relative distances of user profiles to certain points in order to calculate the exact location of those users.
Alex Lomas of Pen Test Partners warns that “aside from exposing yourself to stalkers, exes and crime, de-anonymizing individuals can lead to serious ramifications,” especially for people in the LGBT+ community. In many countries, including the United States, being exposed as LGBT+ could get people fired, and in countries with poor human rights practices, the consequences could be graver still.
