British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on Monday urged Iran to release the British oil tanker that was seized in the Strait of Hormuz over a week ago, adding that “if the Iranians want to come of the dark and be accepted as a responsible member of the intentional community they need to adhere to rules-based system of the international community.”
Iran has denied that the seizure of the British vessel is linked to the UK seizure of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar a few weeks ago. Tensions between Iran and the West have escalated in the past few months. Tehran recently started violating the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which was abandoned by the United States last year. Iran has accused the UK and other European signatories to the deal of not doing enough to limit the impact of US sanctions on the country.
