Last month, cybercriminals managed to steal over $800,000 from the City of Griffin, Georgia by targeting the city’s finance department with a textbook Business Email Compromise (BEC) scam.
The threat actors sent a fraudulent email to a city employee in which they posed as a city vendor and requested the employee to change the vendor’s payment information. Because all the information provided by the scammers was correct, the employee processed the request. As a result, the city transferred two substantial sums totaling over $800,000 to a bank account controlled by the attackers, instead of the vendor’s account. However, authorities believe the money can still be recovered.
