As the seventh round of US-Taliban negotiations went underway in Doha on Saturday, a wave of violence swept across Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of close to 300 fighters from the Afghan government and the Taliban. Previous rounds of peace talks between US officials and members of the Taliban also coincided with renewed violence in Afghanistan, as the Taliban aimed to put pressure on the US by showing its power at home.
The last round of talks ended almost two months ago. Both sides have broadly agreed that a final peace agreement would result in a withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan under condition that the country will not be used by militant groups to launch attacks against the US and allied countries.
