Europol is developing a “cryptocurrency tracing game” that is intended as training material on cryptocurrency crime prevention. The agency says the game “will allow law enforcement officers to get hands-on training and advice on tracing cryptocurrencies in criminal investigations,” according to Europol. This is the first time gamification is used as a “law enforcement training opportunity” for tackling crypto crime.
Criminal activity involving cryptocurrency can take on many forms. Threat actors frequently make use of the relative anonymity provided by cryptocurrencies in order to launder profits from cyber campaigns. In addition, crooks try to obtain crypto coins by means of cryptojacking, i.e. the illegitimate use of a system’s resourcing powers for mining cryptocurrency, or by hacking into crypto exchanges and other crypto firms.
