The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is preparing an antitrust investigation into Google, the Wall Street Journal reported last Friday. Anonymous sources told the newspaper that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is letting the DOJ carry out the probe. The FTC has investigated Google in 2011 and 2013, but the DOJ is launching a new investigation.
While Google has been fined billions by the European Union for antitrust violations, US regulators have been far more lenient with the tech giant up until now. However, the new investigation may be different, because animosity for the firm has increased over the last few years as both liberal and conservative lawmakers and citizens have become more vocal about their dislike of how Google operates, even though the motivations behind that contempt differ.
