5G telecommunication networks are bound to revolutionize the world, but the revolutionary aspects of this technology also result in major security challenges for companies and governments alike, security experts warn.
While current telecom networks, such as 4G, are hardware-centric constructions, 5G networks will be built on a more software-centric architecture. This will make the networks more flexible and capable of connecting billions of devices. However, the downside is that they will be far harder to secure than 4G and even older networks. Due to the overwhelming complexity of these networks and the growing cybersecurity skills shortage, analysts believe the security of 5G networks can only be tackled by heavily relying on artificial intelligence (AI).
