Last Friday, China retaliated against recent US sanctions targeting Huawei and various other Chinese tech firms by issuing a draft bill ordering Chinese firms that want to buy “network products and services that affect or may affect national security” to conduct a thorough analysis of the national security risks involved.
The new Chinese legislation could be used by China to bar the use of US technology by Chinese firms in a way that mimics a recent US executive order. That measure, signed by US President Donald Trump, declared an national economic emergency allowing the government to ban technology solutions of “foreign adversaries” that pose “unacceptable risks” to national security.
