The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) had previously identified the foreign ownership stake in Grindr as representing a security risk to the United States. Now CFIUS has reached an agreement with the company Beijing Kunlun Tech which acquired a 60% stake in Grindr to sell its stake by June 2020.
The application, which describes itself as “the world’s largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans and queer people” represents a risk in that sensitive and very private data could be transmitted back to China and used for espionage or criminal purposes.
