UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday stated that he is “deeply concerned by the military movement taking place in Libya and the risk of confrontation.” Guterres was referring to recent westward movement by the Libyan National Army, a force loyal to Khalifa Haftar, a military leader who is challenging the legitimacy of the internationally recognized Libyan government in Tripoli.
The UN Secretary-General is visiting Tripoli to promote peace negotiations to end the second civil war in the country since Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in 2011. Guterres emphasized that “[t]here is no military solution,” adding that “[o]nly intra-Libyan dialogue can solve Libyan problems.”
