NATO at 70: Where next?

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established on 4 April 1949, which means that the military alliance is turning 70 this week. For this occasion, POLITICO has asked various experts to project how NATO will evolve in the next 10 years.

According to James Stavridis, NATO’s former Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, NATO is currently in its 3rd incarnation. The first version of the alliance was shaped by the Cold War confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union (SU). The second incarnation became recognizable after 9/11, when the alliance began to focus on counterterrorism operations abroad. Currently, NATO is paying more attention to Europe again in the context of a renewed Russian threat. Stavridis believes that ten years from now, NATO will be in its 4th incarnation, which will see the alliance launch more operations in the cyber domain, while it’s activity in Europe will extend to the Arctic borders with Russia.
