US adversaries and allies on Tuesday were united in their condemnation of US President Donald Trump’s Monday decision to officially recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a territory that Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Six-day War.
At a meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, the body’s European members raised “strong concerns about the broader consequences of recognizing illegal annexation and also about broader regional consequences,” while pointing out that “[a]nnexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law.” China, Russia, Indonesia and South Africa all issued rebukes of the US move as well.
After Trump announced his intention to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan last week, Syria stated that it was “more determined to liberate this precious piece of Syrian national land through all available means,” while analysts from around the world warned that the move would set a dangerous precedent.
