US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is traveling to the Middle East this week as part of US President Trump’s efforts to isolate Iran. Pompeo will try to get support from Kuwait, Israel and Lebanon for the strategy that has not been welcomed by US allies in Europe and has even exacerbated tensions in the US government itself.
As part of the plan, the State Secretary wants his department to classify Iran’s military Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as well as various Iraqi Shiite militias that are trained by Iran, as foreign terrorist organizations. However, various US military and intelligence experts are worried that this approach will put a significant strain on US relations with Iraq, which would be bad news for US soldiers stationed in the country.
