Researchers with Palo Alto Network’s Unit 42 have discovered a campaign targeting wireless presentation and display systems used by enterprises. The campaign was launched in January and involves a new variant of Mirai, an internet of things (IoT) botnet that up until now was known to target consumer IoT devices. The enterprise systems under attack are WePresent WiPG-1000 Wireless Presentation systems and LG Supersign TVs. The new Mirai variant comes equipped with 27 exploits, including 11 new ones.
The researchers believe that the threat actors behind the campaign are targeting enterprise systems because these can provide the botnet with more bandwidth, thereby making it possible for the attackers to use the botnet to launch more powerful distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
