Cybersecurity experts believe that Russian efforts to interfere in the 2020 US elections are taking on a slightly different form than in the past, with Internet trolls using fake social made accounts to “amplify” politically divisive content, rather than creating new content as they did in 2016. The shift in strategy is a response to extensive efforts by social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to ban fake news and phony accounts.
In addition, threat actors are hacking into PCs and mobile devices in order to create lots of seemingly legitimate social media accounts using compromised devices. The accounts are then used to build large followings and amplify decisive posts.
