A Russian court has convicted two native cyber security specialists with treason for “having contacts with” US intelligence. A former top officer of the country’s Federal Security Service’s information-security division was sentenced with 22 years imprisonment, while a manager at Russian cyber security firm Kaspersky Lab was jailed for 14 years. Two other suspects in the case have pleaded guilty of the same charge and are set to be sentenced at a later date.
Very few details about the case have been made public. All suspects were arrested at the end of 2016, soon after Donald Trump won the US Presidential election. The Russian government has denied that the case has anything to do with accusations made by US intelligence that Russia meddled in the 2016 elections.
