The DoD released a new summary of its AI strategy this Tuesday (February 12) titled “Harnessing AI to Advance Our Security and Prosperity” and outlining its future plans for AI development and integration. “AI is poised to transform every industry and is expected to impact every corner of the Department, spanning operations, training, sustainment, force protection, recruiting, healthcare and many others,” it reads. “Other nations, particularly China and Russia, are making significant investments in AI for military purposes. These investments threaten to erode our technological and operational advantages and destabilize the international order. As stewards of the security and prosperity of the U.S. public, the Department must leverage the creativity and agility of the United States to address the technical, ethical, and societal challenges posed by AI and realize its opportunities to preserve the peace and security for future generations.
In response to this central challenge, the DoD introduces several key themes for its AI development. It begins with the assumption that “thoughtful, responsible, and human-centric adoption of AI has the potential to transform all aspects of DoD positively, thereby supporting and protecting U.S. service members, safeguarding U.S. citizens, defending allies and partners, and improving the effectiveness, agility, affordability, and speed of operations.” From this point, the department highlights priorities like “emphasizing the rapid, iterative delivery of AI” and scaling technologies “using decentralized development and experimentation, enabled by a common foundation of shared data, reusable tools, frameworks and standards, and cloud and edge services.” It also mentions strong partnerships with the civilian sector, workforce cultivation, ethics and safety development, and the position of the Joint AI Center (JAIC) as the “focal point for carrying out the DoD AI Strategy.”
