China is boosting economic and relationship-building investments with the Caribbean island of Jamaica, according to the counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy. “The investments keep growing each month. The two-way trade has more than surpassed what it was in 2017. International development cooperation has reached a new high, as we saw more than 3,000 Jamaicans who have been invited to China on short-term training programs, which cover a wide range of subjects that are key to Jamaica’s social economic development.” In addition to business development, China is inviting over 400 Jamaican athletes to train in China over the next three years. Aside from its Belt and Road Initiative tie-ins, these moves are likely a broader part of Chinese geopolitical strategy to boost friendships in the American hemisphere near American borders.
