China is reportedly barring three US citizens with dual citizenship from leaving the country in order to compel their their husband/father to return and face trial, where he is wanted for banking fraud. The family members have not been charged with any wrongdoing themselves and the Chinese foreign ministry, which does not recognize dual-citizenship, has defended the decision. The US State Department has warned against this Chinese practice in a January travel advisory, noting that the country has used “exit bans” on the relatives or colleagues of American nationals wanted by Chinese authorities.
