Saudi journalist disappearance may alter Washington’s relationship with Riyadh

It can be difficult to predict which situations concerning a single person will go viral and become a cause célèbre for an entire country. Some are now predicting that, if the allegations are somehow proved, the alleged murder of a Saudi dissident at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul could become exactly that in the U.S.. According to Turkish police, journalist and critic of the Saudi Arabian government Jamal Khashoggi was murdered on the premises of the Saudi consulate. While the Saudis vehemently deny the allegations, Mr. Khashoggi has been missing since his visit to the consulate. Both democratic and republican senators have addressed the topic with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham tweeting “we agree if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid – economically and otherwise.” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy also tweeted that “if this is true – that the Saudis lured a US resident into their consulate and murdered him – it should represent a fundamental break in our relationship with Saudi Arabia.”
