The 17 agencies that comprise the U.S. intelligence community (IC) are working to improve interaction between each other and the exponentially increasing troves of data through what an IC deputy CIO describes as the “concept…vision…idea” of “Augmenting Intelligence using Machines” (AIM). “We’re auditing routine functions that analysts, curators, collectors have manually done in the past to free them up to perform more intelligence.” This officer also provided three examples on AI’s current AIM-framework usage in the IC: 1) National Security Agency use of AI to improve human language processing 2) National Geospatial Intelligence Agency use of AI tools to sort imagery and identify targets for human review and 3) the National Reconnaissance Office using AI to identify potentially relevant intelligence from mass stores of data.
