The U.S. is increasing its 33,000-strong force of permanently stationed troops in Germany by 1,500 in a display of “commitment to NATO and our collect resolve to support European security.” The additional troops represent new units of field artillery brigade, multiple-launch rocket system battalions, and a short-range air defense battalion. The increase will be fully implemented by September 2020. This increase turns around rumors of the Trump administration’s interest in reducing the U.S. military’s presence in the country.
