The highest grossing “paid utilities” app in the Apple Mac App Store has been “deceiving users and stealing their browser histories to send to China.” Marketed as anti-malware or anti-adware, users were not suspicious of granting permissions. But a researcher has found that all files given these permissions were saved and exported to a domain in China. This domain has since gone offline and the circumstances of the data collection and storage remain unknown. While malicious apps are not uncommon in Google Play, Apple’s vetting process has made these cases extremely rare.
