Russia is scheduled to begin delivery of its S-400 missile system to Turkey in 2019, an update that comes in the midst of an ongoing Turkey-U.S. political escalation. The $2.5 billion deal will be the first to equip a NATO ally with Russian missile defense systems, one that is incompatible with NATO systems, and has been harshly criticized by the U.S. and other NATO members. The Turkish economy continues to slide into crisis as local economic troubles merge with U.S. sanctions over Turkey’s refusal to release a U.S. pastor from jail.
