The alliance between the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan “remains firm,” according to a new UN report. While ISIS has expanded worldwide, Al Qaeda remains stronger in places like Somalia, Yemen, South Asia, and the Sahel region. Some states have assessed the threat from Al Qaeda as a greater threat to security than ISIS, with an emphasis on their adaptability and “resilience.” In spite of its international network, its core reportedly remains in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.
