Turkey’s June elections passed sweeping changes to the power of its executive leadership, placing “nearly limitless” powers in the hands of President Erdogan. Erdogan is now the sole authority who will decide whether the country inks a deal for a missile defense system with Russia, or whether they will reject the deal in favor of a U.S. system. “This is not a conventional bureaucratic decision based on technological superiority and/or price,” said a presidential aide. If the Russian deal is finalized, it will mark the first time a NATO member state would deploy the Russian system.
