Iran is mass producing a long-range, air-to-air missile that was reverse engineered from what was once the main armament of U.S. F-14 fighter jets from 1974 before being retired in 2004. The U.S. sold extensive arsenals of weapons to the Shah of Iran before his deposition. The new government has reproduced some of these armaments, allegedly adjusting parts and pieces to improve range and precision. It remains unclear what aircraft will carry the missiles and if they would ever be effective against modern aircraft equipped with advanced countermeasures.
