United, Delta, and American Airlines all complied at the last minute with a demand from Beijing requiring them to scrub any mentions of Taiwan as a country, instead categorizing it as a province of China. The companies, long unwilling to make these changes, are now referring to Taiwan simply by using the city names and making no mention of its political status. The U.S. State Department has announced its opposition to such requirements by foreign governments, but have not otherwise interfered in the issue.
