After ongoing contestation and several back-and-forths, the Taliban again overran two districts in Eastern Afghanistan. Of 19 districts in the province, the Taliban controls three while the Afghan controls four. The 12 remaining district are contested. This Taliban victory comes amidst announcements from the Afghan military of 1,700 insurgents killed and wounded over a three week stretch of fighting, numbers that may be heavily inflated. Sources indicate that the Taliban, on the run militarily, is now only targeting “soft targets” like these two districts that were too far away to receive rapid reinforcements from the U.S.
