Turkey has promised to continue oil purchases from Iran, in spite of American demands to halt the purchases after it left the nuclear deal. These announcement comes together with the continued clash over arms purchases, as NATO-member Turkey is in the final stages from purchasing a missile defense system from Russia that is not NATO-compatible. The U.S. and its NATO allies are considering responses to Turkey’s military purchases, and continued refusals in response to U.S. demands in other areas may impact the outcome of future measures, both of which may end in U.S. sanctions. “We need [Turkey’s] behavior to reflect the objectives of NATO, and that’s what we’re diligently working to do,” while not taking “actions that undermine its efforts,” said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
