Israel announced that it deployed two Patriot missiles and shot down a Syrian fighter jet that allegedly passed more than 2 km inside Israeli airspace. The last time Israel shot down a Syrian fighter occurred in 2014, although similar incidents have occurred more recently with drones. Syrian forces, with support from Russia, continue military operations near the Golan Heights. Responding to these operations, Israel has intercepted a number of missiles that veered towards Israeli territory during internal fighting in Syria. Syria also downed an Israeli fighter over Syria while the jet was on a bombing mission against Iranian bases in Syria. Both parties have announced they do not want the conflict to escalate, but it continues to simmer as events like these continue.
