Most Germans think Europe can defend itself without U.S. help: poll

A recent poll indicated that only 37% of German believe that Europe depends on the U.S. military for its security. It also found that responses did not vary significantly by former West and East Germany, where political histories with the U.S. vary drastically. German voter opinion continues to be a major factor in the impasse between Trump and the EU in terms of defense spending, as the U.S. continues to maintain a force of over 35,000 troops in Germany, in addition to additional bases in Poland and elsewhere.
