4,000 police officers were deployed around the city of Paris on Sunday after France’s World Cup victory over Croatia. Thousands of revelers took to the streets and a portion of the crowd turned violent around midnight, with some people throwing projectiles at police, breaking shop windows and looting stores along the famed Champs Elysees. Police responded with tear gas and water canons, and made a number of arrests. Similar confrontations occurred in other cities around the country. The two deaths came from non-violent accidents, one in which a man broke his neck jumping into a canal and another caused by a single-car traffic collision.
