Leftist candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador has won the Mexican presidential election in a landslide victory, collecting over 53% of votes while the second place candidate received around 22%. During his campaign, President Obrador stressed that he would “rule for the poor” while dealing toughly with corruption and decreasing the militarization and high aggression levels that characterizes the country’s ongoing war on drugs. One area expert has predicted that his presidency will result in a number of conflicts with the US concerning the war on drugs, immigration, and trade.
