An Ebola outbreak was declared at the beginning of May in the Northwest of the DRC. Since then, 55 cases have been reported, with 25 fatalities. Over 1000 have been vaccinated as authorities and health workers try to prevent the disease’s spread. Of particular concern was its spread to Mbandaka, a provincial capital city of more than 1 million persons that is well-connected to Kinshasa. Risk of continued spreading remains high, but it appears that vaccines have shown initial success in containing the outbreak.
