Speculative Design: DARPA’s Airborne Optical Energy Relays
It was inevitable that one (if not a few) posts in our ongoing Speculative Design series would consider a project over at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)- the pioneer GOAT organization in the history of large-scale speculative design projects.
As we previously mentioned, nothing propels speculative design ideas to what the Department of Energy calls “Earthshots” (or what is commonly known as a strategic “moonshot”) faster than the expertise and resources of a USG department or military branch. This is especially true of DARPA. And while NASA is credited with creating the concept of the moonshot, DARPA is, in the end, the seminal speculative design factory of the USG.
Explore with us DARPA’s Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay (POWER) program, which “aims to create a revolutionary power distribution network through the design and demonstration of airborne optical energy relays.”
